Privacy Policy

Who we are

This website is thatcomputergirl.com, operated by Donna French (“That Computer Girl,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and how it’s handled.

What personal data we collect and why

Contact forms

When you use a contact form on this site, we collect your name, email address, and any message details you provide, so we can respond to your inquiry. This information is sent to us by email and is not used for any other purpose without your consent.

Newsletter (Tribe Notes)

If you subscribe to our newsletter, your email address is stored by our email service provider (Mailchimp) so we can send you updates. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link included in every email. See Mailchimp’s privacy policy for how they handle your data.

Comments

When you leave a comment, we collect the data shown in the comment form, along with your IP address and browser user agent string, to help detect spam. An anonymized string created from your email address (a “hash”) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you’re using it; their privacy policy is available at automattic.com/privacy. After approval, your comment and profile picture (if any) are visible to the public in the context of your comment. Comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service (Akismet).

Courses and accounts (The Digital Toolbox)

If you create an account, enroll in a course, or make a purchase through our course platform, we collect the account and order information needed to provide access and process payment, such as your name, email address, and course progress. Payment details are processed by our payment provider and are not stored directly on this site.

Cookies

Like most websites, we use cookies for basic site functionality, to remember your cookie consent preferences, and (where you consent) for analytics. You’ll be shown a cookie consent banner where you can manage your preferences.

Analytics

We use privacy-focused, self-hosted analytics (Burst Statistics) to understand overall site traffic; this does not rely on third-party cookies. We may also use Google Site Kit / Google Analytics, where enabled, subject to your cookie consent choices. See Google’s privacy policy for details.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g., videos, images, articles). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if you visited that website directly, and those websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction, including tracking your interaction with embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Affiliate links

Some links on this site are Amazon Associates affiliate links. If you click one and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. Amazon’s own privacy policy governs any data collected once you leave our site.

Security

We use security tools (including Wordfence and Really Simple SSL) to help protect this site and its visitors from malicious activity. These tools may log IP addresses and request data for security purposes.

Who we share your data with

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the service providers named above (e.g., Mailchimp, Google, Automattic/Gravatar, our payment processor) as needed to operate the site, and only to the extent necessary for them to provide their service.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely so we can recognize and approve follow-up comments automatically. For users who register on this site (course accounts), we also store the personal information provided in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except their username). Contact form submissions are retained only as long as needed to respond to your inquiry.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you, except where we’re required to keep it for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
